Most coil slitting vendors can handle standard width slit coils — say, 100mm to 600mm strips from an HR or CR master coil. The equipment setup is relatively forgiving, and quality issues are easier to manage. Narrow strip production — strips under 50mm, and especially under 25mm — is a different challenge. The physics of slitting at narrow widths amplifies every quality problem, and a vendor who does standard slitting well may struggle to produce consistent narrow strip.
What Counts as Narrow Strip?
There is no universal industry definition, but practically speaking, strips under 50mm width begin to show the technical challenges of narrow strip production. Strips under 25mm are where specialist capability really matters. Some applications require strips as narrow as 5–10mm.
Common narrow strip widths by application:
Why Narrow Strip is Technically Demanding
Camber Is Amplified
Camber — the lateral curvature of a slit strip — is present to some degree in all slit coils. At standard widths (100mm+), the strip is stiff enough to resist camber-inducing stresses. At narrow widths, the same stress creates visible lateral bow. A strip with 3mm of camber per metre is barely noticeable at 200mm wide; at 20mm wide, the same camber makes the strip unrunnable on any automated feeding system.
Blade Spacing Precision
Producing multiple narrow strips from one master coil requires precise blade spacing on the slitter arbor. At narrow widths, the spacer rings between blades must be accurate to fractions of a millimetre. Any error in spacer geometry compounds across the full set of strips — meaning the outermost strips can be significantly wider or narrower than specified. This requires precise spacer sets and a slitter arbor that maintains alignment under load.
Edge Quality at Small Widths
Burr at the cut edge is proportionally more significant on narrow strips. A 0.05mm burr on a 200mm wide strip is negligible. The same burr on a 10mm strip represents 0.5% of the strip width and can cause edge cracking during forming or abrasion damage on adjacent strips during recoiling. Blade condition and clearance settings must be dialled in specifically for the narrow width and material thickness combination.
What to Ask a Narrow Strip Slitting Vendor
What is the minimum width you can reliably produce?
This tells you whether the vendor has experience with your target width or is guessing. A specialist will give you a specific minimum with caveats about material thickness and grade.
What camber spec do you achieve at this width?
Ask for a number — mm per metre. If they can't give you one, they haven't measured it consistently. Narrow strip camber should be under 2mm/m for most press and forming applications.
How many strips can you produce simultaneously from one master coil?
More strips means more arbor blades and spacers. A well-equipped slitter can produce 20+ narrow strips from one coil; a basic setup may max out at 8–10.
What coil ID and OD can you provide on the slit reels?
Narrow strip reels must be wound consistently and with correct core ID to fit your uncoiling equipment. Inconsistent winding causes tangles and feed problems.
How do you package narrow strip coils for dispatch?
Narrow coils are vulnerable to damage in transit. Proper packaging includes edge protection, correct binding, and separation between coils. Ask to see their dispatch method.
